Mogok Method – Attainment of Liberating Wisdom

In Myanmar, while the most famous influential monk who popularized meditation was Ledi Sayadaw, today, the most popular meditation centers are those of Mogok Sayadaw & Mahasi Sayadaw. While the Mahasi method is well-known outside Myanmar, the Mogok lineage is not. This is due mostly to the scarcity of teachers who can give instructions in English. It is also not easy to select good videos on this style.

The Mogok method is actually very similar to the U Ba Khin method of putting awareness of bodily sensations. There are. of course, differences but these differences do not make both methods diametrically opposed to each other.

Mogok Sayadaw is presumed to be an Arahant. He noticed that even after years of meditation, people still could not penetrate into high levels of wisdom that allowed them to be liberated. He attributed this to a lack of understanding of key Buddhist doctrines, specially the teaching on Dependent Origination. Thus, in Mogok centers, the practise of meditation is always coupled with the teaching of Buddhist doctrines.

We follow this approach in PTBF. It prevents meditation from being reduced to merely a tool for relaxation or a psychotherapy. In this 11-min video, monastics discuss the final goal of Buddhist meditation & practise – Nibbana.
